A layup drill that teaches players to get open with a V-cut before the catch, then attack the basket. It comes from Jr. NBA coach Michael Collins.
Setup:
Players line up on the wing, each with a ball, and a coach stands at the top of the key. One cone marks the V-cut on the wing and one marks the drive by the lane.
Rules:
1 passes to the coach and makes a full V-cut: a hard cut in toward the cone, a plant, then a sharp cut back out to the wing. The coach passes back, and 1 rips through and drives past the cone for a layup. 1 grabs their own rebound and dribbles to the end of the line, and the next player goes.
Coaching points:
- Sell the V-cut: go in hard, then change direction and come out to the ball.
- Rip through on the catch before the first dribble.
- Rebound your own shot every time.
Progression:
Add a line and a coach on the other wing so both sides run at once.
