2-3 Zone Defense - Ball at the Top of the Key
In the 2-3 zone defense with the ball at the top of the key our job is to:
- Make sure that the point guard can't attack the paint
- Deny the pass to the high post
We are encouraging a pass to the wing, the forwards have to be ready to help out if necessary.
3 Out / 1 High / 1 Low Formation
- Our goal is to force a pass to the wing players.
- Deny dribble penetration into the zone
3 Out / 2 Low Formation
Deny Pass to High Post
- Our goal is to force a pass to the wing players.
- We need to deny a pass to the high post
3 Out / 2 Low Formation with Good Shooter
Ready to close out to #3 on a pass
- x1 or x2 defend the shooter closely (whoever is closest)
- The other guard denies a pass to the high post
Pass to the Wing (Bumping)
- The forward on the strong side closes out to the receiving player as soon as the pass is in the air
- The guard recovers to defend #3 and bumps the forward back to the low post to defend their original assignement
