For the price, the New Balance P400 is a solid performer. It has comfortable cushioning, great traction, and dependable support. The materials could be nicer, but the performance makes it a really fun shoe to play in.

The New Balance P400 is an awesome basketball shoe. It's a step up in almost every way compared to the P350. My only issue was that the fit didn't work well for my feet.

The New Balance P400 delivers the same great Fresh Foam X ride with excellent traction, but the stiff, heat-trapping upper and reduced rear-foot stability make it less of a flagship BB than previous models.

The traction is really, really good. It stops on a dime on clean courts and only needs the occasional wipe on dusty floors.

The outsole is no-frills and no gimmicks. It just works well.

The traction is tacky and very grippy. It picked up dust and was hard to wipe, but it stayed rock-solid on the grip ramp.

The cushioning is super comfortable. You get a lot of heel bounce and great impact protection. The forefoot thins out but still offers some springiness.

On court, the Fresh Foam X feels incredibly comfortable. It feels awesome and bouncy.

The Fresh Foam X midsole feels fantastic. It's snappy and provides excellent shock absorption. It's my favourite foam for court sports.

The materials aren't the best, but they get the job done. The mesh upper feels a little crispy, and synthetic heel pieces add durability.
 More details
The upper is not my favourite. It's a mixture of textiles and TPU. It works for performance, and it breaks in nicely.

The upper is heavily padded with fused underlays. It needs breaking in and traps heat and moisture. Breathability is poor.

I had no issues with the support. It was solid. The internal heel counter and padding provided great heel containment and lateral stability with no slippage.

New Balance stepped up the support compared to the P350. It works great.

Support is decent. A lateral stabilizer and chunky flange help, but the rear foot can feel wobbly after break-in. Not ideal for ankle sprainers.

The fit is snug and close to a one-to-one thanks to the half-bootie upper. I had no dead space and felt very locked in.
 More details
The shoe fits tightly around the base of the laces. The rest feels relatively true to size.

The fit is narrow in the heel but very roomy in the toe box. It's stiff out of the box and needs to be broken in. Heel padding firms up after break-in.

Best kept to indoor courts. The rubber lost 0.7 g on the durability test and showed visible wear. I wouldn't recommend these for outdoor play.

Normal, narrow, and slightly wide feet will be fine. Very wide feet should go up half a size or get New Balance's 2E wide option.

They come in D and 2E widths. Narrow and medium feet should go true to size. Wider footers can use the 2E.

Narrow and medium feet should go true to size. 2E widths should also go true to size. Wide footers can try a half size up if needed.
